Elton John Quotes

These are a few of my favorite Elton John quotes:

'I want to be a living legend - and I will.' (Elton John - 1976)

.............................................................

'I can't understand it. I've always said that rock stars are supposed to be skinny and wasted. I think (with me) with a female it's very much a mother image, 'Oh, hey, can I cuddle you.' It's a very subtle thing. In England it isn't. I can't walk around the streets there for fear that I'll get clothes ripped off. They're not subtle at all in England, they just go crazy.' (on being asked how he feels about being a sex symbol - 1976)

.............................................................

'... I love reading a review that says 'Well, Elton John is finished.' I must say there was a review in Creem of 'Caribou', and it was the worst review. It was great. It made me laugh. I don't mind reviews like that because it was very comical.... One magazine printed a letter to the editor from a Kim Sand in Montego Bay, Jamaica, I'm sure John Lennon wrote it, that says, 'I'm tired of seeing this tired old closet queen and he doesn't even move around on stage anymore. Elton John belongs in one.' It was worse than that. But I love those.' (Elton John - 1976)

.............................................................

'Even if I had only one finger left, I'd play for you.' ( Elton John - circa 1970's)

.............................................................

'There's nothing wrong with going to bed with somebody of your own sex. I think everybody's bisexual to a certain degree. I don't think it's just me. It's not a bad thing to be. I think you're bisexual. I think everybody is.' (1976)

.............................................................

'I'm music mad, and if I had it to do over, I'd still plump for a career in music.' (1975)

.............................................................

'... there is something at the (Caribou) ranch called Yukon Jack. It comes from Canada and it's like Drambuie with an extra kick. It's like liqueur, but it's 100 proof. Two of those will set you up for the night. It's the only sort of hard alcohol I drink. Otherwise, it's just wine ... and I'm a sugar-free Dr. Pepper freak.' (in response to what he likes to drink - 1975)

.............................................................

'Give me a couple of drinks and I'll be the bitch.' (in response to who the bitch is in his song 'The Bitch Is Back' - 1974)

.............................................................

'I think people should be free with sex... they should draw the line at goats.' (1976)

.............................................................

'Bernie and I do seem to attract weirdos. I don't know why, because we're not really weird ourselves. People give me pineapples, and some girl gave me her knickers. Yeah, in Scotland, some girl took off her knickers and threw them on stage - along with a bowler hat, can you get that one together?' (1971)

.............................................................

(on his roadies - 1974) 'I love them, I don't tie them up and beat them or anything. They tie me up and beat me. That's why I love them ...'

.............................................................

'They call me the nicest guy in the music business and hell, I don't even eat dick.' (1975)

.............................................................

'I've never been a sex symbol and the clothes I wear have always been to conceal the fact that I'm horribly shy. Look at me; I'm plump, I'm hairy, I've never been part of what they call The Bare Chest Brigade. I'm more "Oh, ain't he lovely? Take 'im home and make 'im a cup of tea!' (1978)

.............................................................

'I was the first person to wear 8 inch platform boots. They were impounded at customs on one occasion ... 'cause they were convinced I was using them to smuggle drugs.' (2001)

.............................................................

(on Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - 2001) '... It made me cry when I made it and it still makes me cry. It reminds me of a period in my life which was bliss. Being with Bernie, working with Bernie ... there was a lot of love ... and the melodies just poured out of me. It was also very personal for both of us because those lyrics were our story ... It's like the opera of our lives, or at least that early part of our partnership. It's like a love story between both of us.'

.............................................................

'Puff (Puff, The Magic Dragon) was really a transvestite. You always find people who are willing to read things into songs. They're the sort of people who write in to the back page of Melody Maker. They're idiots, I mean, how can you possibly write to the back page Melody Maker? You'd have to be a bit demented...' (1975)

.............................................................

'What about 'Daniel', who is obviously a homosexual? Somebody said it's obviously a homosexual song, Daniel, my brother, I love you ... Some skinhead in Manchester. He said that 'Crocodile Rock' is rubbish, and 'Daniel' is a homosexual song, isn't it? So many people have said they can't understand what 'Daniel' means. It's because I left the last verse out, I still thinks it's self-explanatory.' (1975)

.............................................................

'I'm the male Betty Boop' (1978)

.............................................................

Elton on Marilyn Monroe:

'When I think of Marilyn (Monroe), I just think of pain. I can't ever imagine her being that happy.' (1974)

'...he's (Bernie Taupin) really into Marilyn Monroe, man, and you should probably talk to him about that. I'm a Marilyn Monroe fan too, but I think he's more 'into' Marilyn Monroe than I am, because he knows far more about her, and goes to auctions when they sell her things. I think that's terrible. You imagine, they had an auction in Los Angeles where you could buy her driving license. It's very sad to think that nobody loved her enough to actually keep her drving license.' (1974)

'Well, she (Marilyn Monroe) wasn't a cult figure while she was alive, I don't think. I don't think anyone is til they die. She was very popular, but when she died it was like the tragic Hollywood story wasn't it? I mean, everybody loves a story like that.' (1974)

Least Favorite EJ Quote

This has got to be one of my least favorite quotes of Elton which he made in 1977:

'The Mexicans have an expression I'd like to be remembered by. And it goes, 'Feo, fuerte y formal,' and translated, that means, 'He was ugly, he was strong and he had dignity.' That's me.'
(Elton John - 1977)

Here's another one from 1976:

'I just don't have one of those stunning faces that etches itself upon one's memory. Maybe that's an asset. It sure make me try much harder in other ways.' (Elton John - 1976)

His complex problem saddens me. He is such a very beautiful man and so unbelievably talented. I just wish he thought differently about himself...
Yeah, this probably sounds cheesey what I've written - I don't care!

This is one of many of my favorite descriptions of Elton John - which was of his 1974 Oakland Coliseum concert:

'Elton played up a heterosexual female/homosexual male erotic fantasy by riding on the sinewy shoulder of his bodyguard, Mr. America Jim Morris, who wore a sparkling lioncloth that showed off a plethora of rippling ebony muscles. Morris acted as a rickshaw, returning his regally feathered employer back to the stage and the screaming legions.'

Elton John '78 On...

English television presenter Russell Harty to Bernie Taupin in a 1975 interview:
'There's a legend that there really isn't an Elton John - that it's you, you're the real Elton John' talking about an article written by an American reporter.
In a way, I wouldn't blame the reporter for implying that Elton isn't real - because, personally, I have a hard time believing that he is!
Words escape me when it comes to his talent!!

I realize this might upset, intimidate or whatever Elton John fans, but everyone has the right to their own opinion and this is mine:

If I were to be asked what is my favorite Elton John song or album I couldn't answer that, because I can not play favorites when it comes to him!
Although there is one thing that I can play favorites on - the Elton John of the 70's vs. beyond that decade.
Why?

To compare him now to then, looks alone, he almost looks like a completely different person. For one thing, all the weight he has gained...
There was just something about the ways he looked in the 70's that I so loved.

Gone are the breathtaking flamboyantly outrageous costumes and glasses. The handstands on the piano and the very energetic performances he gave in the 70's. He seems so docile now (yes I realize he is much older now)...

I used to love the idea of wondering whether or not he was gay - it was such a wonderful mystery...
I cannot stand David Furnish and this marriage bit about Elton - I just can't get into it or hardly anything he has 'involved' himself in since the 70's...

Then there's his vocals. Ever since he had that throat surgery - ruining the original sound of his singing, which I so favor!
Yes, the piano playing is always so amazing even now.

To me, he even behaves different compared to how he did in the 70's.
Anyone who has footage on him from the 70's, get it out, watch it - then watch something of him past that decade and tell me you don't agree with everything I've written here!

I could go on and on, but I'll stop here.
After the release of Blue Moves, I guess I just became lost in the 70's - the Elton of the 70's...

Love Ya, Elton!!

These fragile times should never slip us by
A time you never can or shall erase
As Friends together watch their childhood fly'

Elton >>---N---> John

Have you often wondered who Elton's lover was in the 70's? It was his manager of 25 years,
John Reid.

About Mr. Reid:
He was born in Scotland. He was well known for his temper and getting in highly publicized verbal and physical fights with the press defending Elton.

"We (Reid and Elton) had a very strange, a very complicated relationship," says Reid, who has submitted to his lawyers a 600-page autobiography, tentatively titled 'Too Close to the Candle' he has written over the past years. John has reportedly said Reid was his "first love".

"He had always relied on me," says Reid, who was reportedly paid a £3.4 million out-of-court settlement (in 2000). "We had a very solid close relationship, both business and personal. That sort of thing never went away."

Elton John lost his virginity to Reid at the age of 23 (1970); lived together for five years.

In the 70's, Elton gifted Mr. Reid a yacht which they had christened 'Madman'.

Photobucket I have tons of articles and very rare pictures of Elton and John together - along with video footage/interviews. I really liked the
idea of them - their relationship. It is too bad it didn't last - personally and professionally.

Elton John's Costumes

Here is a very cool 1976 article on how Elton dresses (well - used to dress...)

Dress Like A Star

Elton is famous for his music, talent, generosity, flamboyancy and the hundreds of glasses he's had designed exclusively for him!
For Elton to wear the glasses they must either have glitter, plumes, lights, hearts, stars, be over-sized, or have at least four colors on them.

For the honor of being the 1,662nd entertainer to have his gold star on The Walk Of Fame on Hollywood Blvd., Elton got a pair of star-shaped specs specially-made to go along with his specially-made star outfit that boasted over 50 stars complete with names!

Elton is one superstar who doesn't have any trouble coping with the tremendous amounts of $$$ his talent has brought him. He digs spending money on glasses, clothes, friends, and fun.

One of his rules of thumb about clothing is that it must feel good next to his body. He likes the feel and softness of silk. Many of his casual and formal clothing are either entirely silk or silk-trimmed.

Elton's definitely of the 'Got it? Flaunt it!' generation.

**********************

IF I were to pick which costumes of Elton's I like the most would be these three:

Photobucket

I find it extremely hard to be partial towards Elton! I definitely couldn't chose a favorite album or song of his - although I have to admit, am very partial towards him of the 70's.

If I had to choose, my favorite glasses would be:

The feather framed glasses

Mink framed glasses

Star shaped glasses

Heart shaped glasses

Rhinestone framed glasses

and the white plastic framed glasses

'I don't know how much I spend on stage clothes. A suit often costs around $5,000, which is pretty expensive when I often wear an outfit only once or twice.
I give a lot of my stage stuff away, mostly to my family. Half my relatives are walking around in glitter suits!'
